About the scent
Opens with peppery flowers, then sinks into resins and oud (resinous wood that smells a little like leather). Castoreum (a warm animal note) gives it a soft, furry depth. Dark and floral at once, slightly waxy, like lipstick on a velvet collar. Sweeter than the notes suggest; for autumn and winter evenings.
Notes
Notes are what you smell in the scent. The top ones come first, the heart follows, the base stays with you the longest. The number next to a note is how many fragrances in the catalogue have it.
Top notes. The first 15–30 minutes after you put it on: what you smell straight away.
- Pepper· 8. Black or pink pepper. A dry, fresh spice that tickles the nose a little.
- . Oil from the roots of an Indian sedge, also called nagarmotha. Woody, earthy and smoky, close to vetiver and oud.
Heart notes. Opens up after about half an hour and stays for a few hours: the character of the scent.
- Floral notes· 2. A bouquet of several flowers put together by the perfumer. Soft and fresh, without one flower taking the lead.
- Resins· 2. Plant resins such as benzoin, labdanum and myrrh. Warm, thick and slightly smoky.
Base notes. Stays the longest, until the end of the day: what you later notice on your clothes and scarf.
- Agarwood (oud)· 8. Resin-soaked wood of the agar tree from Asia. Dark and thick: smoke, leather and a touch of medicine.
- . An animal note once taken from beavers; perfumes today use a synthetic copy. Leathery and smoky, with a warm, furry edge.
- Woods· 4. Several woods together, such as cedar and sandalwood. Dry and warm.
